Education and
Outreach

Education and outreach is a
large part of the search for Bonhomme Richard,
since the Battle off Flamborough Head was one of the most
important naval battles of the Revolutionary War. Getting students,
teachers and the public interested in this particular chapter of American Naval History is
one of the main goals of the project.
NEW! Collaboration with the
USNA
We are proud to announce that
we will be working with the United
States Naval Academy to integrate the Bonhomme Richard
Project into some of the Academy's courses in Oceanography,
History and Engineering. In addition, an online course
will be developed in spring 2010, and there is the possibility
that the Academy's midshipmen will play a role in a survey
expedition next summer.
Lesson Plans for Your
Classroom!
The
following lesson plans explore the
historical, naval, and technical aspects of the expedition. The
lesson series includes archeology, marine technology, and
careers in ocean technology and engineering. They are
aligned with National Science Education Standards for easy use
in the classroom.
These lessons were made
possible by a grant from the Connecticut Office for Workforce
Competitiveness.
The lessons are in
Adobe Acrobat (pdf files).

Virtual Field Trip
to Flamborough Head
In order to generate excitement
prior to the 2006 expedition, an online "virtual field trip" was
offered. See Project Historian Peter Reaveley bring the
battle to life as he speaks from the cliffs of Flamborough Head,
England.
