EXPEDITION 2009
The 2009
expedition was a collaboration with the French Navy, who provided a
vessel in the form of an Experimental Minehunter. The French
Hydrographic Office provided an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle which
took the following photos of wrecks. A magnetometer survey was
also conducted. We covered another 50 square miles of our survey area.
Two shipwrecks were investigated, and a third was newly discovered.
This wreck is mostly buried, so it will take another expedition to
investigate it more closely.
A follow up
expedition was conducted a few weeks after this one. Another
French minehunter equipped with divers and a ROV investigated some
of the targets found by the first minehunter. Unfortunately,
none of those targets were compelling for being the BHR.
We are
grateful to Admiral Forissier (CNO) and the French Navy for their
significant efforts this year. We hope to continue with this
international collaboration in future years.
Here is an
image taken with a multi-beam sonar. This is a view looking
directly down onto the outline of the wreck. Red and yellow
areas show areas sticking up off the sea floor. The red
section appears to be the stern section.

Here's another view in 3-D:

The wreck below appears to
be modern, and may have encountered a torpedo which broke it in two.
